Dunwich Cemetery which over looks the tranquil blue waters of Moreton Bay, is the second oldest Cemetery in Queensland, dating back to 1850. The Cemetery which is mostly open grass fields is the resting place of over 9,000 people, the majority in unmarked graves.

At the entrance, a board erected by the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum reads, "Final Resting Place of 8,426 Dunwich Benevolent Asylum Inmates.

Although a large majority of the graves are unmarked, slumped or sunken and some of the headstones are crumbling, incomplete or no longer legible, the Cemetery is well worth a walk through for the history it contains.

Situated within the Cemetery is the "Asylum Inmates Memorial". :Emigrant Commemorative Plaque, and the graves of medical staff and 2 Brisbane doctors, who died during the typhus plaque that broke out on the sailing ship Emigrant on its route from England to Australia.
