Add PhotosIn 1921, William S. Hart, a legendary western actor and director in silent films, purchased a ranch house and surrounding property in Newhall. The 22 room mansion he subsequently built houses his collections of western art, Native American artifacts, and early Hollywood memorabilia.
Hart lived at the ranch until his death in 1946. In his will, he gave the Horseshoe Ranch to the County of Los Angeles to be set aside for the use and enjoyment of the public at no charge.
Today, the Horseshoe Ranch consists of 265 acres and is a member of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
Both the original ranch house and the Hart residence are open to the public. An assortment of animals reside at Hart Park, including a small herd of bison which were a gift from the Walt Disney Studios in 1962.
Hart's favorite horse Fritz is buried on the grounds and has a large rock monument. There is also a small Dog Cemetery.
Hart is buried in his family's plot in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
