The Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House Cemetery was started before the 1817 brick meeting house was built, with the first recorded burial dating from 1754. The oldest existing headstone is from 1855. Due to Quaker belief that headstones were an extravagance, 135 people are known to have been buried prior to the mid-19th century without a marker. A book is available from our Meeting (hard copy only) that lists all persons buried in the Sandy Spring Meeting graveyard through 2003.
The graveyard is still receiving interments, most today being cremated remains. The graveyard is open to the public unless a funeral is in progress.
