The first known survey of this cemetery was done by noted genealogist Dr. Allan E. Marble on September 9, 1968. Per his usual procedure, he did not give the cemetery a name but instead assigned it an identifying number. For this cemetery, the number was 82. He recorded the location as Bear River.

At a later date, Genweb volunteers transcribed Dr. Marble's survey notes and made them available online at Rootsweb. At that time, the volunteers named it "Mt. Hope Cemetery" but, in the cemetery index, they listed the name as "Mt. Hope". They recorded the location as Bear River.

Dr. Marble transcribed 445 headstones containing 1227 inscriptions. The oldest identifiable stone is from 1849. This is an active cemetery, so the number of headstones is now greater than Dr. Marble’s count in 1968. At the time of his survey, he noted that the cemetery was in very good condition.

DIRECTIONS: In Bear River (Annapolis County side of the river) from Clementsvale Road turn onto Upper River Road, then take the first left onto Tupper Street, which will lead to the cemetery near the end of the street, at Civic #37. It is a very large cemetery situated on top of a hill.
