Given to the town by John Haseltine in 1665 as a place to "set their meetinghouse and for a burying place".
Burial site of all the early inhabitants of Bradford, including four of the first five ministers - Z. Symmes, T. Symmes, J. Parsons, and J. Allen. Also the site of the first (1661-1706) and the second (1706-1751) Meetinghouses, Town Pound (1686) and first schoolhouse (1713). Nearby were the first houses of settlement (1649) and the first (1668) and second (1708) parsonage houses.
This cemetery is referred to as GR1 Ancient Burying Ground in the "Vital Records of Bradford Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849".
There are two "Ancient Burying Grounds" in Bradford. This one in Bradford proper - which has since been annexed by Haverhill, the other in East Bradford - which was renamed Groveland in 1850. That second cemetery is now called Riverview. These are frequently confused for one another.
