Burials began 1548. Between that year and 1855, when the churchyard burial ground was closed by an order of Her Majesty’s Privy Council there were over 19,000 bodies placed in its grounds. When one considers that in addition to that figure the burial ground had been used for probably several centuries previously, the number could be nearer 22,000.
The first internment registered in the churchyard was that of William Lambert on 24th November 1548
