Sand Hill Baptist Church was established on January 16, 1847. It was constituted on January 1, 1848. The first pastor was Rev. John Nix. The minutes, that I have acquired, states that the first minutes were beginning in 1848. The members included white members and their slaves. Due to the story of Southerners and stories of abuse to slaves, slaves were allowed to worship within the church along with the white members. They were considered members also, and if one was not present at church, then they were visited, just like they did with the white members. They were admonished for sins the same as the white members.
During the War Between the States, Confederate troops converted Sand Hill into a hospital. General Sherman's troops burned the church in February 1865 during Sherman's "March To the Sea." The initial site of the first church is up for debate. It is now near Anderson Crossroad, off of Highway 278.
The cemetery is located less than a 1/4 mile from the Church today.
