The "Old Stone Church" is actually the second church building on the site, which was built in 1838 for a Lutheran congregation. The first church had been built as a subscription school and as a house of worship. Old Stone Church and its cemetery had both been long abandoned until 1927. Cora Bell Crim and other local residents restored them and formed the Old Stone Church Memorial Association. The church is the oldest extant Lutheran church in Frederick County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as a Historic Site by Frederick County Virginia.
Directions = The GPS coordinates will indicate an area of open field, which is actually correct. The closest street address would be 461 Green Spring Road, Winchester, Va. As you are traveling East down Green Spring Road, watch for an Historic Marker (on your right). The driveway entrance is right across the street from the marker. This is a paved driveway and you will be on private property. About a half-mile down the drive, you will zig-zag through some farm buildings ... be careful and watch for animals. Shortly after you pass the farm, the drive turns into a gravel path through a pasture. You will be able to see the church off to your right in the distance. After another half-mile, maybe less, you'll come to the church.
