Rapids Cemetery is one of the three remaining original City cemeteries in Rochester. Founded circa 1810, the one and one-quarter acre site was reserved for burials by the Wadsworth family and was until 1902 actually in the town of Gates prior to annexation by the City of Rochester; Congress Avenue was originally named Cemetery Road. The Rapids Cemetery Association was formed in 1883, and bought the land from the Wadsworth family. The RCA was short lived, with the last recorded city taxes being paid in 1900. The RCA's first president was Monroe Oakley, who is buried in the cemetery. The cemetery has not fared well over the years, with most of the stones fallen and many broken or missing completely.
Directions: Take Rte. 390 to the Brooks Avenue intersection. Go east on Brooks; take a right on Pioneer then the next left onto Congress. The cemetery is on the left (north) side of the road.
