The cemetery was opened in 1881 — soon after Rugby's October 1880 founding as a British-American settlement — for the burials of six typhoid fever victims and a young child. It was consecrated by Episcopal Bishop Charles Todd Quintard on Feb. 6, 1882, although it is not affiliated with Rugby's Christ Church Episcopal. It was chartered as a public cemetery by the State of Tennessee on April 27, 1889.
