This historic site was the location of the Jacob Hawn saw and grist mill business, established in 1835-1836 on Shoal Creek. It was also the location of the James Houston blacksmith shop and a small number of cabins. Hiram Abbot and Ellis Eames were going to put up a store. About 30 families lived along Shoal Creek in the immediate vicinity of Hawn's Mill.
On Sunday, October 28, 1838, an immigrant group of about nine wagons arrived at Hawn's Mill and were camping in wagons and tents.
On Tuesday, October 30, 1838 at about 4:00 p.m., Hawn's Mill was attacked by a Daviess/Livingston County force of about 240 men. Daniel Ashby of the Missouri state legislature claimed that reports by religious dissenters led to the attack on Hawn's Mill. Seventeen men and boys were killed or mortally wounded.
On the morning of October 31, 1838, fourteen bodies were buried in the blacksmith shop's dry unfinished well. Three of the mortally wounded were buried in other places in Caldwell County.
The exact location of the burials has been lost.
