Zentralfriedhof Friedrichsfelde, also known as the Gedenkstätte der Sozialisten (the Memorial to the Socialists), is a cemetery that contains most of the graves of former East German (GDR) leaders, including those of Walter Ulbricht who ordered the building of the Berlin Wall, and Wilhelm Pieck, the first President of the GDR. Also among those buried there are Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, co-founders of the Communist Party of Germany. It was opened in 1881 as Berliner Gemeindefriedhof Friedrichsfelde. In 1919 the political parties started to bury their famous members on this cemetery, a tradition that has since then continued until today. It is still in use, and one of the largest park-like cemeteries in the city of Berlin with a size of 78.25 acres.
