This cemetery served as the burial place for soldiers who died in the Charlottesville General Hospital from July 1861 to 1865. According to records there are 1,097 Confederate soldiers buried in this cemetery.
The Confederate Cemetery at UVA is contiguous with the University of Virginia Cemetery. It is located in the Southwest quarter of the entire cemetery area. The statue and monument stands close to the middle. Bronze plaques on four sides of the monument list the names of those buried here. Most stones are fairly modern white marble markers although a few are older cut stone. It is defined from the main cemetery by a low 1 foot stone wall on 2 sides. The outer two sides are the same 4 to 5 foot walls as the main UVA cemetery.
Cemetery Road leads off Alderman Road. The gate is located on this road.
