The Bridges/Baptist Burying Ground is in the middle of a field west and south of the farmer's house. It can be easily spotted by the 9 beautiful pine trees which can be seen. To reach it, go east of Attica on Highway 5 ro 1.2 miles and north on a gravel road for 1.6 miles. When the first visit was made for the survey, the burying ground was in a state of sad neglect. The pine trees had had their lower limbs sawed off and had been left where they had fallen, on the fence and on the stones. The fence is in fair condition, but weeds, underbrush, vines and briars had many of the stones hidden as many had fallen. The name Bridges derived from Thompson Bridges who owned the land and his wife Nancy and daughter Mary A. were known as "Hardshell" Baptists and the burying ground was often called Baptist. In 1873 Thompson Bridges deeded one-half acre to the Regular Predestination Baptist Church of North Cedar. The inscriptions were copied and the research done by Winona Davis of Attica, whose great grandparents, James and Mariah Locke, and great great prandparents William and Sarah Bridges, were buried here. The stones are identified by rows from the east fence to the west. This information was provided by the Marion County, Iowa Historical Society.
