In 1864, St. Peter Catholic Church was formed from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at Edgard to serve the east bank of St. John the Baptist parish, Louisiana. Early funerals were held at St. Peter’s and burials were at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edgard. There were a few burials that were done in area between the church and Mississippi River which was planned to be the cemetery but river encroachment quickly proved this area to be usable. About 1870, burials began in the current cemetery area. A number of earliest tombstones are missing because practice of multiple burials in the same plot and the building of family tombs. The cemetery serves as the final resting place for the parishioners of St. Peter Catholic Church and the churches formed from its original church parish: St. Hubert Catholic Church, Garyville (1907); Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Reserve (1937); St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. LaPlace (1947); Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, LaPlace (1979).
