Formerly City of Westminster Cemetery,it is entirely separate from the Hanwell Cemetery at 31 Uxbridge Road.
The cemetery is on the South side of the Uxbridge Road, at Hanwell, opposite Kensington Cemetery. It belongs to the City of Westminster which operates three cemeteries situated outside the borough. The Parks Client team manages the service which is contracted to Continental Landscapes Limited.
Originally called 'City of Westminster Cemetery', this cemetery was owned and managed by the original City of Westminster before local government reorganization in 1965.
The first interment took place on 2 August 1854
Please make memorials here only for burials listed in the StGHS parish registers from 2 Aug 1854 and later. Earlier burials from the registers should be memorialized in the appropriate FindAGrave cemeteries.
For StGHS burial from 1 Apr 1725 through 1765.
St. George's Hanover Square Mount Street Burial Ground
For StGHS burials from May 1765 through 16 Mar 1854, please make your memorials here:
St. George's Hanover Square Bayswater Road Burial Ground
12 acres were purchased in Hanwell (Ealing) and the ground finally consecrated in July 1854 to serve as the third (and final) parish burial ground for St George's Church in Hanover Square. It was set aside for the sole use of the StGHS parish from 2 Aug 1854 until 1889, when care of the burial ground (now called Hanwell Cemetery) was transferred to the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Westminster. No burials were recorded in the parish registers between 17 Mar 1854 and 1 Aug 1854. There is a note in between those two dates about all burials from the Workhouse being buried in Brompton Cemetery. There is no note about other parish burials, though, so researchers will have to look through neighboring parish registers for burials during those several months. As a point of interest, the first StGHS burial in the new Hanwell Churchyard was of 5-day-old "Infant Newton" of Hart Street on 2 Aug 1854. (In fact, the first four burials were children whose individual ages were counted in days or weeks.) And did you ever wonder what it cost in 1853 just to have a cemetery and its buildings designed? Robert Jerrard, the Architect appointed to do the job, turned in a bill for £14,741 17s 11d. Parish Registers are available on ancestry.com.
