Located near the Greenville city limits on Rutherford Road, the site originally contained 9 privately owned acres. The land owner was paid by the city for use of the land as a potter's field. Greenville officials paid Mackey Mortuary to bury transients and the city's poor in unmarked graves here. In 1914 the site was purchased by three leaders of Greenville's black community who developed the site into an African American cemetery.

Some of the interments after the purchase were African American soldiers from Camp Sevier and burials from Hopewell Tuberculosis Hospital, which was on the grounds of the County Home. In the 1930s, Six of the nine acres were sold, leaving the current thee acre site.

After the last burial in 1967 the cemetery fell into disrepair and was forgotten, eventually becoming a dumping ground. The community has recently come together and volunteers are working to revive this cemetery.
