The Mulberry Presbyterian Church near Kirksville, Adair County, Missouri had its origin in 1870 when the early settlers, Isaac A. Novinger, John H. Miley, Sr., G. W. Novinger, Peter Voelker, and Robert Willis, met in a school house on Mulberry Creek to begin religious services. For 8 years, Sunday school and worship services were held at the school house. In 1878 the decision was made to build a church. Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Novinger donated the land for the church and cemetery. In 1886 Rev. J.B. Latimer and W.T. Baird of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church organized this group into a congregation with the following persons as elders: J.H. Miley Sr., G.W. Novinger, Peter Voelker, Robert Willis, and George W. Motter. In the fall of 1887, ground was broken and the structure was built of native timber, cut and sawed on the land of J.H. Miley Sr., who donated the lumber. Peter Voelker designed and built the church, assisted by all the members. The new building was dedicated in September, 1888.
