This land was deeded to the city of Charleston, WV by Joseph Ruffner in 1831 to be used as a city cemetery. The cemetery was converted to a park in 1920. Only a few of the graves were moved by the families that could afford to move them. The majority of the graves were not moved. The stones were laid flat and covered over and the park was built on top of the cemetery. Only the Ruffner family markers remain visible from the old cemetery. The park also contains a memorial erected by the Kanawha Riflemen Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy in honor of the Kanawha Riflemen.
