Directions: Travel east of Gilliam on Highway 240 for 9/10 of a mile. Turn right (south) on the Rock Quarry Road (county gravel road 124). At a four-way intersection, turn left (north) on dirt road currently E911-renamed Pumpkin Avenue, formerly county road 129. Go about 1/10 mile to the cemetery which is on the left (west) side of the road. This road ends at the cemetery and an electric utility easement continues north along the former road right-of-way. The cemetery is shown on the Saline County plat map for 1876, 1896, and later plat maps. Plat location information shows the cemetery in Township 51, Range 19, Section 3, more specifically in the southeast corner of the southwest quarter of Section 3.

This cemetery is named after Vance Laurie, an early to mid-20th century land owner. Laurie was the grandson of Joseph Bonaparte Smith who owned the property in the 19th century and is buried on his home ground. Vance Laurie's great grandparents, William and Ann (Wylie) Smith, began obtaining land patents in the area around the cemetery by 1840. The cemetery is a burying ground for the Smith family and other families bound by marriage to the Smiths. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the small family cemetery was known as the Smith Cemetery. The cemetery is fenced and exhibits some maintenance beneath the towering cedar trees.
