In 1805, at the arrival of a resident pastor, church construction began on Mount St. Mary’s Church. Next to the church, the cemetery was established around 1806. In 1808, this same resident pastor established Mount Saint Mary’s College.
The congregation and the college students worshiped together until 1894, when the administration of Mount Saint Mary’s College decided it would no longer serve the local parish. Construction was completed in 1897 on a new church to be called St. Anthony’s Shrine. Responsibility for Mount Saint Mary’s cemetery was transferred to St. Anthony’s Shrine.
The old Mount Saint Mary’s Church was abandoned and eventually was destroyed by fire in 1913.
The cemetery contains the graves of many local Catholic families, faculty and students from Mount Saint Mary’s College and several members of the family of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
