Founded in 1794, when all the burials in the Yamachiche cemetery were buried here. Place all burials, pioneer or modern, in this cemetery.
The beginnings of this Yamachiche cemetery, which is located in the center of the village of Yamachiche and opposite Sainte-Anne Street, either on each side of the church and the presbytery, took place in 1788. But this cemetery was not not the first in Yamachiche, because there was one in the present sector of the viaduct when the church located on the hillside of the Canton existed and went through fire in 1780. From June 25, 1788, burials were made in the current cemetery, this during the construction of the new church, and the transfer of the exhumed bodies from the old cemetery (about 900 in number) was carried out in two stages, 3-4-5 November 1795, followed by a funeral service, and the second, October 10, 1800.
Mr. Canon Elzéar de Carufel, who had a real devotion to the Passion of Jesus, is this priest of Yamachiche who had erected, in 1930, in the middle of our imposing cemetery, a sumptuous Calvary crowned with the fourteen stations of the Way of the Cross , in bronze, which are the work of the architect Dom. Cogné, from Montreal. The cost of its erection was defrayed by generous donors, whose names are engraved in stone and this Calvary said was built on the exact site of a mass grave, which contains the buried bodies of the less fortunate of that time.
