In the early years of the community, the area known today as Common Street Cemetery was part of a larger area near the town center that functioned as common pasture land. Common Street Cemetery was established in 1754, when the town center was relocated further west along Mount Auburn Street. In the mid-1700s it also became the site of the town’s second meeting house, which was strategically important during the Revolutionary War.

Initially the cemetery was smaller than it is today and included only the northern part of the present day property. Around 1836 the Common Street meeting house was torn down, the cattle were relocated to pastures in outlying parts of the town and the cemetery was expanded to the south and east.

The cemetery sits on 2.8 acres. The earliest death date is 1754.

The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as WAT.800 Common Street Cemetery.
