The Salem Street Cemetery was established in 1832 with later additions in 1860-1865. The original cemetery, dedicated in 1832, occupied the rear area of the present property, with the front section as a Baptist Meeting House lot. The cemetery was established by the town of Malden to replace the older Bell Rock Cemetery.

The earliest grave stones from 1832 in the rear section are slate carved in Grecian Style with funeral urns and classical lettering, although some older stones in Medieval Style with death heads might have been relocated from the Bell Rock Cemetery. A series of granite vault tombs for notable families such as Tufts, Cox, and Barrett, are set on the west side following the original line of the access road from Salem Street, erected ca. 1850.

In 1880, the burial of Methodist Bishop Gilbert Haven was given civic attention in Salem Street Cemetery, among the last before the opening of Forest Dale Cemetery in 1885. City burials were then transferred to Forest Dale, with declining use after World War I, totaling 1000 lots.

The cemetery sits on 4.5 acres. There are approximately 1,100 headstones.

The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as MAL.805 Salem Street Cemetery.
