The Richmond Cemetery was chartered on 25 January 1848 and dedicated on 31 May 1856. The first burial occurred the next day, 1 June 1856. On 30 August 1862, the Battle of Richmond was fought partially in the Richmond Cemetery as the retreating Union soldiers took cover behind gravestones and monuments as the victorious Confederate forces pressed their attack. Approximately 174 Confederate casualties from the Battle of Richmond are buried in a mass grave in Section H. Most of the early records of the Richmond Cemetery are lost. Confederate soldiers broke into the cemetery office during their two month occupation of Richmond and stole or destroyed the cemetery records up to August 1862. In early 1895, a fire in the cemetery caretaker’s house destroyed the cemetery records from 1862 to 1895. The locations of unmarked graves from 1856 to 1895 have therefore been lost. The Richmond Cemetery has an on-site office that is open during regular weekday hours. The office staff is courteous and helpful. The East Main Street entrance gate is open from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm seven days a week. The Summit Street entrance gate is open from 8:00 am until 7:00 pm seven days a week from April 1st through October 31st. The Summit Street entrance gate is open from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm from November 1st through March 31st.
