The burial ground adjacent to the city gates was originally a Potter's field, where excommunicants and criminals were buried. The land was later purchased by the Presbyterian church for use as a Protestant Cemetery. The oldest graves bear no inscription, because it was thought better to obliterate, not retain, the memories of individuals who died outside the church or the law. (Abridged from 1918's "St. Augustine Under Three Flags: Tourist Guide and History" published by W. J. Harris Company.)
