Offutt AFB Cemetery, also known as Fort Crook Cemetery, is located within the boundaries of Offutt Air Force Base, in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska, which essentially limits access to military and civilian personnel. The base was originally established as Fort Crook Army Post by act of Congress in 1892, with initial construction completed by 1896. This included the establishment of a cemetery, where the first two burials were recorded in 1897 - the infant son of musician Samuel Pittson, and Pvt. Joseph Ferguson. While the cemetery is officially listed in National Cemeteries records as Fort Crook Cemetery, Offutt AFB was established in January 1948 to be the home of the newly established Strategic Air Command, and the cemetery is now commonly referred to as the Offutt AFB Cemetery. The cemetery contains many active duty and veteran personnel, as well as quite a few of their spouses, and includes a large number of infants and young children. A significant number of the infants died during a polio outbreak between 1951 and 1954.
The cemetery is now “closed”, meaning only those with prior reservations or spouses of the interred can be buried there. As of May 2016, there have been 804 interments, maintained under the oversight of the 55th Wing Mortuary Affairs office.
