Famous Pioneer Cemetery - It is located on the grounds of the old Workman-Temple family homestead in the City of Industry, California. El Campo Santo is one of the oldest private cemeteries in Southern Californa. Within its low brick walls, the one half acre site features a neo-classical mausoleum and a small plot surrounded by a gothic revival cast-iron fence. Established in the 1850's as a family use only cemetery, by California pioneer William "Uncle Billy" Workman. At the turn of the century, the cemetery was abandoned. Walter Temple, grandson of the Workman's, regained the site and saved it from further desacration. He constructed the present standing cast stone miniature clasis Grecian mausoleum and moved the remains of his family inside in 1917. Noteworthy members outside of himself, a successful oilman, real estate developer, interred inside are his grandfather: William "Uncle Billy" Workman who made his mark in several areas: He was the leader of the first wagon train which brought permanent eastern settlers to Southern California. Once settled, he became mayor of Los Angeles, served on the city council and was the city Treasuer. His tenures were responsible for development of the city infrastructure. Perhaps the most famous interrne is Pio Pico and his wife Ygnacia, the last governor of Mexican California. A friend of the family, he was moved here from Calvary Cemetery during reorganization of that facility. The cemetery is an historical California landmark located on a six acre site along with the preserved Workman-Temple homestead.
