Sometimes we forget that even cemeteries need care to stay alive. Mount Moriah Methodist Cemetery was originally the cemetery adjacent to Mount Moriah Methodist Church. It was active from 1845 to 1967 and is estimated to contain around 350 graves. The church moved to another location and, without care, the cemetery became overgrown, with stones eroded, broken, buried, and hidden. In July 2004, an article was published about the deplorable condition of the cemetery challenging volunteers to restore it. And, with the leadership of Ken Cornett, they did, dedicating over 500 man-hours and recruiting assistance from local government agencies, businesses, and historical groups. Names were recorded as stones were uncovered. Volunteers researched local records to put names on graves whose stones have been lost and added 38 unmarked graves to the list.
The names entered here and credited to Ken Cornett are from that list. To Ken and all those who worked with him, the descendants of those buried at Mount Moriah owe a debt of gratitude. Now Mount Moriah needs our continued care.
