Founded in April 1869 by local black leaders, Mount Ararat was the first African-American cemetery in Middle Tennessee. In 1982, the board of directors of Greenwood Cemetery took over management. Still, the property suffers from perpetual neglect. Interment records have been lost over the years. In 2001, volunteers from the Davidson County Cemetery Survey identified 400 names from gravestones on the property.
NOTE: Do not confuse with Greenwood Cemetery West which is adjacent to the east.
