Holston Baptist Church Cemetery was originally located beside Holston Baptist Church, near the north shore of the Holston River, very close to the shoreline of the future Cherokee Lake. When TVA surveyed the cemetery prior to the creation of the lake in 1941, 43 graves were found and all were identified. The church relocated to its present location on Lakeshore Road, west of the original location, and a new cemetery was created beside it. Three of the graves in the original cemetery were removed to cemeteries in other counties, but the remaining forty graves were reinterred in the new relocated Holston Baptist Church Cemetery.

In addition to the graves reinterred from the original Holston Baptist Church Cemetery, 194 mostly unidentified graves from flooded Shields Cemetery in Grainger County were reinterred at the relocated Holston Baptist Church Cemetery. The Shields graves, only nine of which were identified, were reinterred on the southwest side of the reinterrment cemetery. Although the Holston Baptist Church Cemetery is well cared for, the section containing the Shields reinterrments has not been maintained, and is now covered in trees and undergrowth. A few inscribed markers and many funeral home markers, marking the locations of the graves of unidentified persons, are visible in the densely overgrown area, which holds almost five times as many graves as the mowed section of the cemetery.
