The Waterloo City Cemetery is located along Rogers Street, with entrances on East First Street and Hamacher Street. The old half of the cemetery is on the south end, while the north end contains more recent burials. The first known burial in the Waterloo City Cemetery was in the 1820s. This cemetery, along with the Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, was the primary burial place in Waterloo for many years. During the 1950s, the Waterloo Cemetery became overgrown with weeds to the point that many tombstones were not visible at the time. The local newspaper, The Waterloo Republican, started a campaign to find a solution to the cemetery. Bryant Voris took the reins and initiated the organization of the Waterloo City Cemetery Maintenance District by pursuing a law through the Illinois Legislature. During the month of April 1958, the citizens of Waterloo voted to establish the Waterloo Cemetery Maintenance District. Trustees were elected, endowed care was offered and the cemetery was cleaned up. Since then, the Waterloo City Cemetery has been maintained by the Waterloo Cemetery Maintenance District. The cemetery still has lots available for burial and is open from dawn to dusk.
