Old Attica cemetery is located with-in the city limits of Attica. It sits between New Street and Bond Street on the north and south and between South Perry and South Union on the east and West. Most of the tombstone are down or stacked in a pile. There are old lists indicating there could be around 400 people buried here. ---------------------------- A brief history of Old Attica Cemetery: This cemetery, known originally only as Attica Cemetery appears to have been started at about the same time the town of Attica was founded in 1829. By the time of the Civil War the cemetery was nearly filled and there was no way to expand it since houses had been built on all sides of it. In 1868 a new cemetery was platted about a mile south of the Attica Cemetery and named Riverview. After about 1870 few known additional burials were made at the original Attica Cemetery and the original cemetery came to be known as the "Old" Attica Cemetery to differentiate it from the newer Riverside Cemetery which was sometimes simply called the Attica Cemetery rather than by it's formal name. The old Attica cemetery fell into disrepair and was neglected for many years. In 1930 the DAR conducted a survey of the old cemetery and recorded those stones which could still be read. Many of those have since become illegible or have fallen down or broken. Only around 20 stones remain standing at this time, a large number of fallen stones have been stacked in the middle awaiting re installation. It is estimated that somewhere between 300 and 500 may have been buried there during the period it was used. Most known burials seem to have been made in the 1840-1860 period...only a couple after 1870 and none known to have been made after about 1880. The earliest known death date from there is 1830.
