Actively used until around 1902, this cemetery was established in 1858 by Father Henry Frederick Frohboese, second pastor of the Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church, and is located on a four-acre plot 1.5 miles west of Mascoutah on Rt 177. Ground for the new Catholic cemetery was purchased in 1884 by Father Anton Pieke and is located behind the Mascoutah City Cemetery.
Reportedly, a number of families moved their loved ones' remains and tombstones to the new cemetery, but there is no documentation stating whether remains were moved as well as the markers, which can be found in the newer cemetery.
In 1962 a list of those buried here was compiled by Oliver H. Waigand and Frank W. Moll and given to Emmet G.L. Moll, the local funeral home owner. At the bottom of the list Emmet Moll states, "The date shown on this list is undoubtedly the date of burial." Other burial records can be found in the church's archives.
The cemetery had become blighted over the years and, in 1964, Father Giesen and the Knights of Columbus cleared the overgrown brush and removed damaged marker debris, leaving only one tall marker to honor those who rest here. It is now properly cared for by parish members.
