The burying ground of the William Cobb family in what was then Hawkins County, this cemetery was originally located on the south bank of the Holston River, on land owned by H. P. and W. P. Read, descendants of William Cobb. When TVA surveyed cemeteries in the area of the future Cherokee Lake in 1940, this cemetery, which TVA identified as Read Private Cemetery, was determined to be below the water level of the future lake, requiring the graves' relocation. At that time, forty graves were located in the original cemetery, but ten of those graves were unknown. Of the thirty identified graves, fifteen were graves of unidentified Reads, and two were graves of unidentified Cobbs. Only thirteen graves were identified with names. Except for the grave of William G. Read, which was removed to Bethesda Cemetery, all graves in the original Read Cemetery were removed to the relocated Read Cemetery at the present location, about two miles east of the original location. Because only a few Cobb tombstones are marked in this cemetery, the cemetery became known as Cobb Cemetery.
