"Fort Hill" was the name given to a settlement area in 1837 by local residents before townships were established in Lake County, Illinois. Fort Hill was the identity given to the post office, election district, school and cemetery.

The Fort Hill Cemetery was officially established June 23, 1847 on land owned by Soloman Marble and was deeded to the Commissioners of Lake County. The first known burial on the land was that of Warren Scovill who died October 10, 1844. A second parcel was added to the original cemetery on May 24, 1900 on land donated by Mary H. Huson, William Thomson and their spouses. In 1921 the land that borders East of the Fort Hill Cemetery was sold by Chat Thomson to St. Joseph's church from Round Lake to establish a cemetery for their parishioners.

A Fort Hill Cemetery Association had maintained the property and burial records for many decades. It was discovered in 2017 that the cemetery had been abandoned for many years. Restoration of the property was started in the summer of 2018 and Lake County transferred ownership of the cemetery to Avon Township.
