The early Saint Marys Cemetery on Fellsway East, between Savin and Pine Streets, was established in 1854 as a Catholic burial ground by the Archdiocese of Boston. The property was originally part of the Malden Poor House lot, divided in 1853 as the Malden Highlands lots for the Edgeworth Company. The cemetery was laid out the following year in 1854, dated by the present cast iron gateway, confirming its sale as part of the Malden Highland lot sales.
The earliest remaining grave stones are dated to 1863-1865 on the south lots along Savin Street, suggesting the original cemetery was platted on Savin Street, and expanded north to Pine street at a later date as shown on the 1885 atlas.
The cemetery sits on 2.5 acres. The earliest death date is 1858 and latest ca. 1970. There are approximately 1,000 headstones.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as MAL.803 Saint Marys Roman Catholic Cemetery.
