LOCATION: West of Wilmington. On State Route 48/100 one-half mile east of State Route 100/141 intersection.
Mount Olive Cemetery holds the remains of approximately 13,000 Delawareans – the ancestors of Wilmington's African American community. Mt. Olive opened in 1899, though some of the burials are much older. Several African American cemeteries in Wilmington were razed in the early nineteen-hundreds, with many of the bodies being moved to Mt. Olive. The cemetery was actively used until the 1970s, with the last recorded burial being in 1987. Veterans from the Civil War, Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War are all buried at Mt. Olive, along with doctors, ministers, educators, and thousands of working-class people who helped make Wilmington the thriving community that it is today. Notable burials include: A conductor on the Underground Railroad; two Civil War veterans who were present in Galveston, Texas on the original Juneteenth (when Union General Gordon Granger announced emancipation); and the parents of Louis Redding, the lawyer who successfully argued Brown v. Board of Education before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1954.
Marker Reads:
In 1862 the members of Mother AUMP Church, also known as the Union Church of African Members, purchased property at the corner of Lancaster Avenue and Union Street in Wilmington for the purpose of establishing a cemetery. In 1914 the Church sold the property, then known as St. Peter'‚ Cemetery, for the construction of Bancroft Parkway. Remains were disinterred and reburied at Mount Olive. Many prominent citizens and community leaders are buried here. In 1980 the Friends of Mount Olive Cemetery was established to provide ongoing care and maintenance.
