Established in 1845. The Elmwood Cemetery was donated to the people of Northfield by Gov. Charles Paine." The Northfield Cemetery Association was formed on April 1, 1854. The cemetery is in a residential neighborhood near the Northfield Schools. The terrain is mostly level with descents near the perimeters. In 1855 the name of the cemetery was changed to "Elmwood Cemetery." The last burial in 1985.
The Elmwood Vault, as indicated on many death certificates or obituaries, was used as temporary storage during the Winter months. Many bodies were interred to another location such as Northfield Falls, Roxbury or Tunbridge.
