This cemetery is adjacent to the ruins of Richland Lutheran Church, completed in 1927 and destroyed by fire due to lightening strike in 1933. The congregation was organized in 1907 and the earliest identified grave bears the year 1909. Following the fire, services were again held in homes and one-room country school houses. Plans for the new church were drawn up in 1947, and three years later, the dedication service of the new church, located 3 miles east and 3 miles south, were held on September 17, 1950. Sixty years later, in 2010, Richland Lutheran (ELCA) Church is the only county/rural church in Adams County, NDak, still holding regular services. Burials are still occasionally made in Richland Cemetery.
