The first permanent settlers arrived in Adams County, Nebraska in 1870. Juniata Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Adams County, was established in 1873. We do not know the identity of the first burial. Unfortunately, the early cemetery records are lost. Three children's stones have death dates in 1873.
Eleven children are known to be buried here from a disastrous diphtheria epidemic in 1879. There are probably others unknown. The only soldier of the War of 1812 buried here is Ezekial Norris. He served in the Tennessee Cavalry and was buried in Block 2 in 1878. Many Civil War soldiers came west to homestead free land after the war and are buried here.
The cemetery covers about 15 acres. Blocks 1 through 4 are the oldest portion of the cemetery. There are about 2,470 known burials. In 1909 the Juniata Grand Army of the Republic post obtained a Civil War Gatling gun and mounted it in memory of their comrades. Tragically during the 1960s the gun was stolen from the cemetery and was never recovered. The cemetery is owned by a non-profit cemetery association. The volunteer sextant is Catherine Renschler.
