Mrs. A. Hopper Succumbs After Suffering Stroke
Mrs. Anna Hopper, a resident of this community for the greater part of her 82 years, passed away Tuesday morning just before noon in the Calistoga Hospital, where she had been for four days. She was hospitalized after suffering a stroke.
Mrs. Hopper was a native of Lobette County, Kansas, where she was born on October 14, 1870. After coming west in her early youth, she spent the remainder of her life in Calistoga and vicinity. She was the adopted daughter S. W. and Polly Collins, who are counted among Calistoga's pioneers.
Her close surviving relatives are her son, Richard Hopper of Sacramento, and these grandchildren: George Compere Borrette of Santa Rosa, Robert R. Hopper of Sacramento, Gwendolyn Sciutto of Morgan Hill, Dixie Lee Gorman of Sacramento, Audrey Hopper of Sacramento, and Carol Ann Hopper of Calistoga. There are also four great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hopper's husband was the late Lee Hopper of Calistoga. A daughter, Rita Hopper Compere Borrette, passed away as a young woman, and a son, Paul Wesley, died as a child.
Mrs. Hopper was a home body and a fine woman, whose main interests, even in her younger years, were her home and church. She was a loyal member of the Methodist Church, and as such, held membership in the local federated church, the Calistoga Community Church.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) morning at 11 o'clock from the Simic Chapel in Calistoga, with the Rev. Harry C. Porter of the Community Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Calistoga Cemetery, which is located on a hillside once owned by Mrs. Hopper's father. At the death of her father, Mrs. Hopper became the owner of the local burial ground, along with other adjacent lands. The cemetery she deeded to the City of Calistoga, in 1936, when she felt she could no longer assume the responsibilities involved.
