3rd Ohio Independent Company Sharpshooters

This unit was organized similarly to that of Berdan's Sharpshooters and after organization was complete in March/April 1862 was ordered to fight in the Western Theater. After mustering in, this unit took the designation of Co K, 66th Illinois - The Western Sharpshooters. Raised as a sharpshooting and skirmishing unit, the 66th would be regarded as "mere" infantryman after the unit re-enlisted in 1864. Discarding their Dimmick and Enfield rifles, the men of the 66th would privately purchase Henry repeating rifles and increase their firepower to that of a Brigade. The 66th was mustered out in April 1865.
