Campbells of Campbells Bridge

Campbells Bridge is in Robeson County near the town of Maxton and crosses the Drowning Creek/Lumber River there. It was originally Overstreets Bridge, and Robeson County records show it was licensed in 1785 by a Campbell whose first name was not recorded. However, the Campbells of the Campbells Bridge lived there as early as 1768 when Archibald Campbell of Cumberland County bought 640 acres there. About 1770, Archibald married the widow Katharine McPherson Patterson (1741-1822), widow of John Patterson of Cumberland County who died in 1769. Archibald's and Katharine's only known child, John Campbell, was born in 1772 and lived at Campbells Bridge all his life until his death in 1846. John married a woman named Catherine whose maiden name is unknown and they had many children. Their information below comes from various Robeson Co. estate settlements of these Campbell children: 1. Duncan Campbell (c.1797-after 1872): Moved to Ashe Co., NC. 2. Flora Campbell: (1799-1882): Died unmarried and buried in Watson cemetery, Robeson County. Her brother Hugh, a dwarf, lived with her in the 1850 census.3. Archibald Campbell (c.1804-1875): Records show he lived in Texas in 1872. Married 19 January 1843 to Catharine J. McNeill daughter of Alexander McNeill the Carpenter and Mary "Polly" McEachern. Alexander McNeill was the son of Godfrey McNeill and Catherine "Kitty" McDougald. Polly McEachern was the daughter of Daniel McEachern and a Miss McNeill, a McNeill whose first name has been lost and who was the daughter of James McNeill of Rockfish and his wife Elizabeth McNeill. A Mary McNeill was living with Archibald and Catherine in 1860 in Robeson County. 4. Daniel Campbell (1804-1872): Believed to have married Jennett McBryde. 5. Hugh Campbell (1814-1898). Hugh was only 3.5 ft. tall according to census records. Lived with sister Flora. 6. Neill Campbell (1816-died after 1860): Married 29 March 1843 to Isabella McLauchlin who was born about 1807. Three known children. 7. Janet Campbell (alive 1872): Married a Stewart, moved to Mississippi, then perhaps to Coffee County, Alabama. 8. Mary Campbell (alive 1872): Married a Douglas, moved to Coffee County, Alabama. 9. Christian Campbell (c.1810-alive 1872): Married Daniel Baker, born c. 1802. Both living in Robeson County in 1872. 10. Catherine Campbell (c.1814-alive 1872): Married Alexander McBryde in 1839 in Robeson County; both living in Robeson County in 1872. A printed version of the 1850 census shows 'Catherine P.' as Alexander McBryde's wife, but the Daniel Campbell estate settlement gives her names as 'Catherine M. Campbell'.
