A Virtual Cemetery created by Richard Irwin

My Irwin Cemetery

This virtual cemetery is for the descendants of Rev. John Long Irwin (1812-1871), his two wives (Hannah Rebecca Ford and Ellen Mendel) and their ancestors. [The author, Richard Irwin, is a great-grandson of Rev. Irwin and his second wife, Ellen Mendel, so this virtual cemetery includes my direct Irwin line, plus aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.] Rev. Irwin was a Methodist-Episcopal minister, ordained in the Pittsburgh Conference of the M-E Church in 1831. Initially, he traveled circuits in the counties of southwest Pennsylvania. In 1835 he transferred to the Missouri Conference [Missouri Territory], where he was a preacher and schoolteacher to the Creek Indian Nation. In the late 1830s, he traveled circuits in Arkansas — and was a founding member of the Arkansas Conference of the M-E Church. By 1840 he had returned to the Pittsburgh Conference, again traveling circuits in southwest Pennsylvania, then circuits in the Panhandle of Virginia (now West Virginia). A few years after the formation of the Western Virginia Conference (as it was then called), he transferred to that Conference, serving circuits of Ohio county, Harrison county and Marion county. He was affiliated with this Conference for the rest of his life, excepting only the period of the Civil War, when he served as Chaplain of the 14th West Virginia (Union).
