A Virtual Cemetery created by Joyce Svendsen

Cedar Lawn Cemetery

Paterson, NJA beautiful Victorian era cemetery that is full of sculpture and large tombs as well as modern flat stones. There are winding roads that lead up hills and then down again. There were (until about the 1960s) circular ponds filled with lily pads and gold fish which had in its center a large flower urn. They have regretfully been taken down and now all that remains are the circles. Many bodies were moved here from area cemeteries when it opened around the turn of the century since the smaller cemeteries were neglected and the population in Paterson was growing. If you see internments before the turn of the century here they were probably moved here and often the stone was also moved with the body. There are many such that are buried in a single 'mass' grave. There was a very nice heated white concrete building that stood just inside the gates on the corner of Crooks Ave and Lakeview Ave where one could wait for the trolley out of the cold. This was removed also. There are some famous people buried here. I believe more information is available on the Passaic County Historical Society website.

Joyce Svendsen has not added any memorials to this virtual cemetery.
