E. Roy Stone Jr., of 27 Sylvan Drive, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. He was 88. Born in Greenwood, he was aStone Jr.son of the late Enoch Roy Stone Sr. and Bertha Thorpe Stone, and the husband of the late Edith Hames Stone. He attended Furman University and was owner and operator of E. Roy Stone Co. before his retirement. Mr. Stone was a member of Augusta Heights Baptist Church for 49 years, where he had been chairman of the Finance Committee, the Deacons, and the Forward Program, served on the Pastoral Search Committee as well as various other committees through his many years of service. He also taught the Enoch Sunday School Class, which was named after him. He also compiled, edited and published the Church History 1950-1982. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion, James F. Daniel Post No. 3, where he served as Department Commander of The American Legion for South Carolina from 1952-1953, served on the National Executive Committee since 1943, and was honored as Past National Commander at the 1987 National Convention in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Stone also served on numerous national committees within the American Legion. Through his association with the American Legion, Mr. Stone founded the Goodfellows Club which provided food to needy families at Christmas time. He served as an active member of the Lions Club since 1937, and was a member of Boy Scouts of America, where he was presented with the Distinguished Eagle Award in 1978 by the National Organization of Boy Scouts. Mr. Stone also served as State Chairman of the South Carolina Agency for Vocational Rehabilitation. In 1977 the Vocational Rehabilitation Center in Greenville was dedicated as the E. Roy Stone Jr. Building in his honor. Mr. Stone was also the 1999 recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award for the City of Greenville. Surviving are his sister, Anita S. Rourk, of Charleston; two brothers, Joe Stone and Norwood C. Stone Sr., both of Greenville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Martha Gertude Stone; and a brother, Harold Greer Stone. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Goodfellows Program, c/o The American Legion, James F. Daniel Post No. 3, 430 N. Main St., Greenville, SC 29601; or a charity of one's choice. Visitation: 6 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Augusta Heights Baptist Church. Burial: Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will be at the home of his niece, Kathy Jernigan, 125 Marshall Bridge Drive. Other family members will be at their respective homes.
