FORMER FIRE CHIEF IS DEADWilliam J. Briggs, 64 former chief of the Shelbyville fire department, died at 7 p.m. Friday at the Major Hospital.His death followed and illness of two years. Mr. Biggs was born in Shelbyville Oct. 18, 1878, he was the son of William J. and Elizabeth Ann Briggs. He was married to Miss Edna May Herder Jan. 2, 1902.Mr. Briggs was a member of the Shelbyville Aerie of Eagles, Indiana Police and Fireman's Associtation. He had been had been with the Shelbyville Fire Department for 39 years and served as fire chief for 20 years. He had acted as president of the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association.Surviving are his widow, seven children, two grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters and one brother.
