Bio

Born in North Carolina where I can trace my paternal (and maternal) lineage back to late 1700's and before to Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK. Apparently, after losing his second wife to illness, Neill MacLeod arrived in 1774 (possibly into Wilmington, NC) from Scotland (possibly left port at Greenock or Argyllshire) with 4 sons. They traveled up the Cape Fear Valley to buy land on which they could farm in Moore County, NC near Carthage, NC.

***I am hoping to learn which ship they traveled on (three possibilities are: "Ulysses", "Diana" and "The Gale").

Found some unfamiliar MacLeods/McLeods buried in the Old Scotch Graveyard 6.5 miles west of Carthage.

Revolutionary War era disagreements between loyalists and patriots left one of the sons murdered apparently by a group led by Thomas Wade (Wadesboro, NC named in his honor for serving the patriots during the war) who was avenging another local murder.

Neill's descendants spread south to around present day Pinehurst and Aberdeen and later into neighboring Richmond and Scotland Counties (and likely into South Carolina). Apparently some of my relatives are buried in Old Bethesda Church Cemetery (near Aberdeen, NC) and even some are possibly buried in some of the many cemeteries within the current training grounds of Fort Bragg (maintained by the U.S. Army).

Some distant cousins' property still exists near Pine Bluff and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is called The McLeod Family Rural Complex. Construction on the father's home began about 1840 and his son's home about 1884. Both homes apparently intact. Between the homes, a large arable plot. ***I would love to visit this location. I found a (possibly) late-1800's photo of the family standing around the father's house.

Further afield, the oldest confirmed family member's burial location in my lineage that I could locate is 13 miles west at Green Lake Cemetery (seen in my profile photo) (Richmond County). The next move in my paternal lineage was to High Point, NC (Guilford County) where my great-grandfather lived, grandfather lived and father was born and lived.

Since 1980, I have lived in Pennsylvania. Now in Central Pennsylvania with family members who's Pennsylvania Dutch lineages can be traced from Lebanon County to near Philadelphia and before to the Palatinate /Rhine River Region of Germany/Switzerland. Timelines of immigration are tbd.

When time allows, I enjoy learning about people, where they lived and when, work they did, challenges they faced, where their parents came from and how far back one can trace. Visiting some of the locations where some of them lived, worked, worshipped and were buried gives dimension to their lives and my understanding of a small piece of the American experience.
