As Historical Preservation Ch of Judith Robinson Chapter, DAR and Historian of Brent Rifles 2137, UDC, I with my co-Chairman, Janice Brock, have overseen the restorations and repairs of Founder Cemetery in Tylertown, Walthall Cty, MS during 2018-19. We raised abt $10,000 to clean and repair the 88 gravesites known to be here. We applied for and received two War of 1812 and two CSA gov’t stones for Vets (four CSA vets had markers). We purchased a fitting marker for William Thornhill, Rev War Soldier. Four sitting areas with concrete benches are available, an Historical Marker from MDAH was approved and purchased, a burial site chart stands for all persons interred, and new markers were placed for over half the graves unmarked for years. Thousands of hours of research were logged by J. Brock and S. Johnson aided by Dr. Cathy Harvey and DAR committee members to verify and reveal historical data on the persons interred here. Descendants, family, friends, businesses, and supporters contributed money and encouragement for the success of this project and we are truly thankful for all the help. Janice Brock and I also were heads of the restoration of the Historical Joseph May Cemetery in northeast Walthall County near Sartinville in 2014-16.
All I do today for Preservation of history is based on a love for family—my kin and connections—instilled in me by my father, James McKelvin Williams and his brother “Pat” since I was a small child in the 1940s. Those who have gone before should be remembered in our talk each day.
